We all know that if you want to grow a plant of any kind, you need soil, water, and sunshine. Have you ever wondered what each of these elements really provide for your plants?
The importance of keeping your plants well-hydrated and with access to plenty of sunshine is well understood. However, the other big factor in the health of plants that is often overlooked is the quality of the soil they are growing in.
Plants “eat” the minerals and organic matter contained in the soil. If they are well “fed,” plants grow very healthy and strong. If soil does not contain enough of the nutrients that plants need, they can’t grow as well and may even become weak, and prone to insects and withering.
You can learn more about the importance of organic matter content in the soil here.
Before purchasing soil for your garden, take the time to research and understand where it comes from and what it contains.
For example, if the soil you’re considering says it’s guaranteed to be weed-free, it may sound appealing at first. However, this often means that the soil has been heat-treated to kill any weed seeds and seedlings. Unfortunately, this process also destroys valuable microorganisms that your plants need to grow healthy and strong.
It’s also important to understand the soil’s composition. Different soils contain varying levels of minerals and organic matter. Check the ingredients listed on the bag. It should include organic matter such as compost, seaweed, manure, or mushroom compost, among others. It’s also beneficial if it contains peat or coir (coconut husks) to help with water absorption.
